1. Description:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) are arguably the fastest-growing fields of computing in the current dispensation. These fields of computing have applications in all areas of life. The adoption of AI and DS tools is on the increase in the developed world but the case is totally different in the developing nations like Nigeria. One of the main reasons for the slow adoption or lack of adoption of AI and DS in Nigeria is the shortage of computer scientists interested in medical research and the shortage of clinicians interested in DS and AI related research. The focus of the project is to build capacity in AI and DS with special applications in medicine. This call is to employ upcoming researchers with background in medicine who are willing to have a career in DS and / or AI related research. These individuals will receive special training in medical image analysis, computational modelling and other skills required to conduct medical research. We are interested in individuals who will develop computational models for medical diagnosis or prognosis using medical images such as Magnetic Resonance Images, Ultrasound, Mammogram images, etc. The focus will be on any body parts, for example human brain, liver, lung, heart, etc. This is an exciting opportunity for any clinician interested in building a career in health data science and Artificial Intelligence.

2. Location and Funding:

The successful candidates will be based at the Lagos State University (LASU), University of Ibadan (UI) or Redeemer’s University (RUN), Nigeria. These locations are the physical project sites for DATICAN.

DATICAN is part of the collaborative efforts of the University of Chicago, Lagos State University, The University of Ibadan and Redeemer’s University. These Universities are very passionate about capacity building and they believe that more clinicians are needed in Africa to help with computational modelling and adoption of data science technologies toward extracting useful information from health data and consequently improving health care delivery. The studentship will cover the tuition fees of the successful candidates. Applicants who already have another scholarship covering tuition fees are not eligible.

3. Application Requirements:

Essential: The ideal candidate will demonstrate an interest in data science and have MBBS. He / She should be highly motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a team is very essential. Knowledge of medical images such as MRI, CT, etc is very important.
Desirable: The ideal candidate should have the ability to understand new concepts. Ability to program in any programming language is desirable but not compulsory. Knowledge of image processing and image analysis is not compulsory but could be useful. However, the potential to learn about image analysis, image processing and cancer research is key.

4. How to Apply::

All applications should be sent to manager.datican@gmail.com and copy director.datican@gmail.com. Application pack should contain *an* application letter addressed to the Director of DATICAN, a 2-page CV, details of 3 referees, BSc certificate, personal statement, research proposal and any other supporting document. Shortlisting will commence immediately after the deadline and only the shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. For further information, contact John at +234(0)8103501847.

Identifying Future Data Scientists from Secondary Schools

DATICAN will sponsor the University education of 3 students interested in studying Computer Science or related courses in LASU, UI or RUN. These 3 students will be identified through a quiz competition to be conducted around June 2024. Any principal of secondary school interested in listing his school for this competition should contact us at manager.datican@gmail.com

Competition for Undergraduate Students of Computer Science

DATICAN will award prizes to 3 undergraduate students of Computer Science or related courses currently studying in LASU, UI and RUN. Selection will be via a quiz competition to be held in LASU around October 2024. Any student interested in the competition should contact us at manager.datican@gmail.com
